CIMA CertBA : If you don’t have any related qualifications, no work experience, or no business/finance/accounting background, but know that you want to develop a career in business, You can start CIMA at the Foundational Level (Certificate Level) and attain the CERTBA Qualification NQF Level 5. The Cert BA is also an entry route into the CGMA Professional Qualification. Once you complete both qualifications including meeting the required practical work experience, you’ll be awarded the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation.
CIMA Professional Qualification (PQ): If you have a combination of work experience and a relevant degree in business and finance, you could jump straight into studying the CGMA Professional Qualification to become a Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA).

As illustrated below, the Qualification Framework, derived from the CIMA Competency Framework elaborates 3 further ideas:

Idea 3 : CIMA is structured around 3 vertical pillars (the Enterprise, Performance and Financial Pillar) and 4 distinct horizontal levels (Certificate, Operational, Management and Strategic Levels) requiring a pass at 13 Objective Tests (OTs) and 3 progressively challenging accounting and integrated business case study exams (the Operational Case Study, Management Case Study & the Strategic Case Study Exams);

Idea 4 : CIMA allows you to obtain 3 separately recognised qualifications along the way (the CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting, CIMA Diploma in Management Accounting and the CIMA Advanced Diploma in Management Accounting); and

To practice as a management accountant, you will need a relevant professional qualification like CIMA. There are several qualification providers, but CIMA is the Global Leader in Management Accountancy Training. The CIMA Qualification is current, and innovative that leads to the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) status. This is the ONLY Globally Recognised Designation for Management Accountants!

No Qualification or Experience?

Entry Point: CertBA (Certificate Level)

Yes, you Qualify! You can start your journey to becoming a management accountant as soon as you leave school or college no matter your exam results. The Certificate in Business Accounting is a formal qualification (NQFL5) in its own right & a formal entry route into the CIMA CGMA Professional Qualification. Once you complete both qualifications including the relevant 3 years of Practical Work Experience (PER), you will be awarded the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation.

Prior Business/Finance Qualification?

Entry Point: (CGMA PQ) Operational OR Management Level

Yes, you Qualify! If you have a combination of a relevant degree in business and finance/accounting and relevant work experience (or just a relevant degree) you could jump straight into studying the CGMA Professional Qualification to become a Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA).

CA (SA): Eligible CAs(SA) looking to become CGMAs are exempt from 15 of CIMA’s 16 CGMA examinations and only need to complete the Strategic Case Study Preparation Course. Learn more.

Yes, you Qualify! This is a bridging course with 3 competencies (2 months duration) introduced for students who do not qualify to start at the CGMA FLP Operational level. The Foundational Level is an entry route into the CGMA FLP. Once you complete the CGMA FLP including the relevant 3 years of Practical Work Experience (PER), you will be awarded the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation. To gain the Chartered Global Management Accountant® (CGMA) designation, you need three years verified relevant professional experience:

Main Points to note about CIMA PER:

You will need to record and have your PER supervisor/s verify three years’ experience (full-time equivalent). This can be accumulated before, during and after your studies)
You can work in any industry or sector and size or type of organization.
There is no prescribed list of acceptable Or expected job titles.
The only time requirement is to demonstrate three years’ experience in a relevant role(s). There is no need to split this down any further.
You can add details regarding your practical experience requirements (PER) to your dashboard ANYTIME.
You will be able to submit your PER for audit (to be signed off) once you have completed the Management Level.
Complete 3 of the 5 core activities. For each activity, provide one example of your work experience and complete the STAR template, showing how you demonstrate this activity in your day-to-day role. The total word count for the STAR template is 500-750 words.

CIMA to SAICA (CA SA)) Pathway

CIMA members are able to convert to the CA (SA) designation under the CIMA to SAICA Membership Pathway Agreement and hold both the CGMA & CA (SA) designations!

1. The conversion route is only available to individuals who –

hold the ACMA, CGMA or FCMA, CGMA designations, AND

are graduates. (Graduates refer to holders of a Bachelor’s degree which is registered on Level 7 of the NQF, takes a minimum of 3 years to complete and comprises at least 360 credits or holders of foreign academic qualifications which are assessed by SAQA as equivalent to a South African Bachelor’s degree which is registered on Level 7 of the NQF, takes a minimum of 3 years to complete and comprises at least 360 credits), AND

gained registration with CIMA by completing the education, examination and practical experience requirements as prescribed by CIMA.

2. The conversion route is only available to individuals who –

CIMA candidates who meet the requirements outlined above must successfully complete the following:

SAICA Professional Programme

The Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) examination

The successful completion of the professional programme remains valid for a period of three consecutive calendar years from the date on which the professional programme was successfully completed. This means that the APC must be passed within three consecutive calendar years of having successfully completed the professional programme.

If this period has lapsed without the candidate having successfully completed the APC, the candidate is obliged to complete a relevant professional programme again before being eligible for entry into the APC again.

Our Refresher Study Recommendation if you Start At Case Study - OCS/MCS/SCS

We have designed the TEPP Package (TEPP Combo 4) for you to pass your exam 1st time! Our Recommendation is that even though you qualify to start at any CIMA Case Study Level (OCS/MCS/SCS), the course will require that your knowledge of Objective Tests, E, P & F Pillars under the CIMA 2019 syllabus is up to date as the course mainly seeks to apply that knowledge to the case study. Please ensure you review the CIMA 2019 Syllabus for your respective level to confirm that your prior qualification was not only recently obtained but rigorously covered this syllabus. If not, we strongly recommend that you enrol for/take our Tuition & Exam Preparation Package (TEPP -Evenings or Weekends) to help deepen your mastery of Objective Tests (E, P & F Pillar Content) and secure the vital tools you will need on the case study course instead of going direct. Experience teaches us that 90% of those who follow our advice pass 1st Time whereas 95% of those who do not often regret it!

CIMA Fees
How much does qualifying for the CGMA Qualification cost?

1. CIMA Registration £99

All new students pay a one-off registration fee, which also covers your first year’s subscription. For most students, registration costs £99. Effective from May 2023, To encourage exam participation and progression during the first year of study, candidates registering with CIMA for the first time, will only be able to complete the registration process if they additionally purchase 1 exam credit which will be valid for 12 months.

Additionally, the only exam credit a candidate can purchase, during registration, will be limited to CIMA's recommendation, notably:

Certificate in Business Accounting = Purchase a BA2 exam credit
Operational level = Purchase a E1 exam credit
Management level = Purchase a E2 credit
Strategic level = Purchase a E3 credit

Re-registration fee is applicable if your CIMA membership has lapsed and you want to join again, This is £225. The re-registration fee (£225) includes the annual subscription fee for that year and must be paid at once for your account to be re-activated.

2. CIMA Annual Subscription £139

Your first year’s subscription is included in your registration fee. Your annual student subscription gives you access to things like the Future Mindset pack, the CIMA Study Planner, FM magazine and a listing in the CIMA student directory. You will need an active student subscription to be able to sit your exams and submit your practical experience requirements (PER) which you need to pay every year (after your first year) on 1 January. 3. Exemptions

CIMA removed exemption fees in 2019, so if you think you don’t need to sit certain CIMA exams because of your relevant degree or qualification you will need to submit your qualification documents when you register with CIMA. 4. Cost of Exams
